Spring Training Report-Volume 4

A Spring Visit with Coach Don Byrd-May 29, 2009

The Mule Fan: What are your views on how spring training went this year?

Coach Byrd: I thought it went very well. I was excited about the improvement at all positions. The kids got better. Each practice they looked like they were quicker on their assignments. They looked like they played with their pads lower. It was fun to watch them progress. We went three weeks. We had our game and then last week we worked out just on individual assignments and so forth just to polish some areas where we thought they needed some work and get the most out of the days that were allowed.

The Mule Fan: The offense has the most experience returning. How did it progress? What were you most excited about and in what areas do they need to focus?

Coach Byrd: I thought our execution level became better and better each and every practice so I was excited about that. I guess the thing that I’m most excited about and this really goes for the whole team is that I see depth at a lot of positions. I see depth at quarterback, receivers, offensive line. I’m starting to see how it’s unfolding and I’m excited that there’s not just one player at those positions but there’s two or three that we can stick in there and win and be productive. They need to work out this summer and get after it because there are some people nipping at some people’s heels to get their position. It’s neat to experience that.

The Mule Fan: In the spring game, we noticed a lot of 4-3 defense (four down lineman, three linebackers) vs. the five man front that you have traditionally run. Is that dictated by personnel or do you have broader change in mind defensively?

Coach Byrd: We’re moving a little bit more in a 4-3 direction. You see so many different types of offenses. You see so many different types of formations. It’s a little easier to line up in the 4-3. It also takes a little pressure off the secondary. Instead of having five defensive backs and having them learn a lot of different responsibilities, we can let the linebackers adjust a little bit more and let the secondary stay in their base coverage a little bit more. So we looked at that and I thought it went very well.

The Mule Fan: And you can still slip out of that into nickel coverage for passing situations pretty easily can’t you?

Coach Byrd: Oh yeah, to go to a nickel or 4-2-5 as they call it. Basically all you have to do is slide one linebacker out over a receiver and balance your other two. Then you have a 4-2-5 which we’ve run a lot. We worked on a linebacker lining up on a tight end so we’d be in a 50 front which we’ve done for years too. So we can get into things we’ve worked at over the years. But we wanted to try this base. Coach Moody and Coach Hooks have a lot of experience with the 4-3. We put in some things that they brought to the table and it worked out well.

The Mule Fan: How much work are you able to do in the spring on kicking game and special teams?

Coach Byrd: We didn’t do a whole lot with it. We probably need to start doing a little bit more. We were just basically trying to concentrate on fundamentals of football. We had changed our scheme defensively to run more 4-3 so we really wanted to look at that. We made a couple of little changes on offense. Not anything big but we really wanted to emphasize the running game a bit more so it took away from our time with the kicking game. We let the kickers kick a lot off to the side but actually going out and running it in a team setting we didn’t get to that. That’s something we’ll have to hit pretty hard in the fall. I don’t like doing it a whole lot because you like your younger kids that are not getting on the field that are on varsity to be on the kicking teams. And we’re not sure who that might be at this time so you hate to line up a kickoff team then when you start up again in the fall you shake up the personnel and you really didn’t get a whole lot accomplished in the spring. So we kind of shy away from that.

The Mule Fan: Now we’re into the 7-on-7 season with one competition completed in Houston as we do this interview. By all reports, the event in Houston was quite successful.

Coach Byrd: It was a lot of fun. The neat thing is you’re over at the (Houston) Texans facility. So there’s the “Bubble” which we got to play two games in. And the grass at other practice field is phenomenal. It’s just a neat environment. Then you see all these athletes that are from the Houston area. You see a lot of speed and size. You see some very good football teams. So I love putting out kids in that atmosphere and seeing how they perform. They didn’t get intimidated at all. They came out and won our pool. They won three games. Two of them we had to come back from behind at the end and win which shows a lot of composure and maturity. We took care of that and in the first round we played Klein which had a very good team and won the whole tournament. We lost by two points 33-31. And we gave up a pass right before half that we should have probably played a little better, been a little deeper and were ready for. We didn’t do as well on our extra points. So those were two things but we were there nip and tuck with them and again they were the team that won it. Then we ended up playing Cy Falls in the semi-final and beat them. So we were 4-1 in Houston against great talent. I really wanted to win that first game in the playoffs because that would have qualified us for state and that would have been neat to qualify for state that early. Again we have depth at a lot of positions and I’m pleased with the way we played.

The Mule Fan: What’s the remaining schedule for 7-on-7?

Coach Byrd: We will have league play on Tuesday nights starting in June on the 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th. We’ll have two teams and both of those will play two games. We’ll really have three teams because we’ll get there a little early with one group and we’ll play some other schools. So we’ll have three teams for the league play. Then we have two more state qualifying tournaments. On the 20th of June we’ll play here at Alamo Heights. It’s a 16 team tournament and the top two will go to the state tournament. Then on the 27th we’ll go up to Hays Consolidated which is just south of Austin and play in their state qualifier. So we have two more shots at qualifying for state and state is around July 10th over in College Station. So our goals are first of all to get better, learn more about ourselves and become a team. Number two is to qualify for state. It’s a great situation for our kids.

The Mule Fan: As the kids get ready for school to be out, do they know from you and their position coaches what you are expecting of them for the next two months before they come back in August?

Coach Byrd: They should. When we have our final exam they will meet with their position coaches and the coaches will refine this by telling them this is what they need to work on and this is when they need to be there, here’s what our strength and conditioning program is. They need to do what summer’s there for. Be with their family and if they have vacations they need to do that. But if they’re here in town they need to get out of bed and get up here and work out. That’s our philosophy. I hate with so much going on that time for the family vacations isn’t what it used to be. But we do believe in that. We’re just going to try to get them up here when we can and hope that they’ll get a little stronger and a little quicker over the summer.

Spring Training Report-Volume 3

A Spring Visit with Coach Don Byrd-May 18, 2009

The Mule Fan: You are two thirds of the way through Spring Training as of today. What have you been the most satisfied about accomplishing so far this spring?

Coach Byrd: Well I think we’ve come together as a team. I’ve been proud of the players. I think they’ve challenged themselves. We haven’t really had a bad practice. We’ve continued to improve. I’ve been excited about how the defense has come along. Usually in the past we’ve had a little more experience on defense and the offense has been behind and it’s taken a while for them to catch up. But the defense has improved each and every day. We’re learning more and more about the players. I’m excited. It’s been a great spring so far.

The Mule Fan: It would seem that you’ve had the opportunity to experiment with personnel a little more with the defense. There are four defensive starters out from the 2008 season with two still playing baseball (Warren, Maloy) and a fifth with Hagar involved with track and really putting in some time on offense at tight end. If that’s a fair assessment, I would guess that gives you a better look at the depth of your defense and how they all work together.

Coach Byrd: Yeah we have. We’ve moved some kids around from linebacker to end and we’ve moved some kids around in the secondary. We’ve played with some different combinations and as they show they’ve settled in basically then we’ve built around that and moved on to some other positions. Also we see a kid that gets after it in practice and he might be at one position but we know we don’t have depth at another so we’ll move him over there. So it’s been fun playing with it. You get the right guy that’s a little better at a position then you can see the level of play of the whole defensive unit take off. So we’re excited about that. I’ve seen some real improvement in that area.

The Mule Fan: Quarterback is the most visible position on the field with a different player this spring. What’s it been like for junior QB Cullen Mills in that role so far?

Coach Byrd: First of all he’s just a fine young man. The way he handles himself you can tell that he’s serious, he’s intent and he can take the team and win. The other night at the scrimmage I saw a lot of good things. A couple of times he didn’t make plays but it wasn’t so much him as it was some people around him. It’s real easy if a pass is incomplete or if something doesn’t work to point at the quarterback. But sometimes there are other areas. His improvement and his leadership and his confidence has grown each and every day and I’ve been excited about that. I also can’t say enough great things about (sophomore QB) Steven Elder. I was worried coming into the spring because with Drew (Allen) there, Mills did not get the snaps that I was hoping he would get. So he didn’t get as much playing time. And Elder got hurt early on JV. So neither of them got a full season last year. So we’ve really spent a lot of time with those two out on the field and watched a lot of film with them. They’ve progressing nicely. I believe that Alamo Heights can win with either one of the quarterbacks. That’s what we want at every position no matter who’s starting or who’s backing up. We want two guys that you can win with.

The Mule Fan: The Spring game is Thursday this week (May 21). Can you take us through the format of the game?

Coach Byrd: Well we won’t have any kicking game so we’ll flip a coin and one team will start on about the 30 or 35 yard line. I haven’t decided that yet. They’ll have three downs to get a first down unless they get into what we decide is four down territory. If they don’t then we’ll move the ball 30 yards down the field or half the distance to the goal and then the other team will come out. We’ll divide the first and second team up as evenly as we can and those two will get two series each on offense and defense. And then we’ll put the people behind them in for a series. We’ll bounce it around between two series and one. What it does is give the older kids, the ones you’re expecting to be on varsity, a little more playing time but it also gives the other ones enough time to open somebody’s eyes. We’ll do that for about a half and then take a break. Then we’ll come back for the second half and do pretty much the same format. Hopefully we’ll have a good close game like we did last year which was a lot of fun. We’ll start it right at 5:30. We’ll get some officials out here and a chain crew. Hopefully a lot of people will come see where Alamo Heights is. We’re excited about it. We don’t have to be great. We’re not expecting to look like we’re in playoff form but we’re hoping to go out and execute well and really look at fundamentals. Who is coach-able and who is the most consistent and who finishes plays. Those are the things that I’m looking for.

The Mule Fan: Last time you mentioned that you’ll have a few extra days where you are allowed to coach the kids. So what will you do after Thursday?

Coach Byrd: On Friday we’ll probably come in during the athletic period and lift weights. We’re not going to lift them on Wednesday or Thursday (of this week). So we’ll lift them on Friday. Then after school on Friday we’ll keep them for a short time and watch the game tape and make any corrections. Then we’ll have a three day weekend. On Tuesday (following Memorial Day Weekend) we’ll have the skill people, the defensive backs, wide receivers, tight ends, quarterbacks and running backs, go out and do 7-on-7 during our fourth period. Offensive and defensive linemen will go in the weight room and lift. The after school, the defensive backs and the rest of the skill guys will go in the weight room. And the offensive and defensive linemen will go full pads. We won’t do any team stuff but they’ll do a lot of individual drills for about 40 minutes we’re hoping just working on technique. So we can have three days of just working on the basic techniques of offense and defensive linemen not worrying about any schemes or anything. We can give our linemen one last shot to develop. It’s great for our skill guys to do the 7-on-7 because they’ll be competing in that all summer long. We’re excited about just breaking it down back to the fundamentals and ending that way.

Mules at Spring Training - Volume 2

A Spring Visit with Coach Don Byrd-May 7, 2009

The Mule Fan: Before we talk about spring training, how did the off season program go to this point? Were you pleased with how the workouts went and the kid’s fitness going into spring?

Coach Byrd: Yeah I thought we had a great off-season. I thought boot camp went very well. The players got mentally tough each and every day of that as the season went on. Then we started testing. We didn’t quite get the results we wanted after the first six weeks testing. But with the second six weeks session we really had some great improvements in the weight room. We saw a lot of good things so we’re excited about where we are right now. Now it’s just spending time teaching our kids the game of football.

The Mule Fan: This is the second consecutive year to have spring training after many years of not having it. You obviously liked what you saw last year. It would seem that graduation drives your objectives to some extent year-to-year. But what are you most excited about and what are your principal objectives going into this spring training?

Coach Byrd: Well I’m excited because we have six back on offense. That’s the most we’ve had in a while. So I’m excited to make sure that those six continue to challenge themselves and improve. And then we just need to find out who belongs in what slot; position and JV or Varsity and so forth. They improve a lot in the off season and now this is a great opportunity for us to watch them for three weeks and point out things and then set goals this summer and make sure we give them the best avenue to become the best player they can by next year.

The Mule Fan: What differentiates a spring workout versus what you have in preparation for games come August or September?

Coach Byrd: Well we couldn’t go out in pads this time of year before. We could only work out about 45 minutes in our athletic period. So the neat thing about this is we are not preparing for a game. We don’t have to worry about getting a lot of plays in. We can just put in our basic offense and defense and just teach technique and evaluate personnel. And by not worrying about a game we can spend a little more time with the younger kids and teach them as much as we can and find out where their weaknesses are and again have them set goals this summer and tell them what we need to see out of them come the first practice August 10th.

The Mule Fan: Do you film spring workouts?

Coach Byrd: Yes we film every practice and watch it right afterwards and make a few notes of what we need to work on the next day. Filming is a valuable tool because there are so many players out there and so many of them are moving around. It happens so fast. You do correct a lot of it but sometimes you miss a step here or a person stepping wrong or blocking the wrong person. You can show players what their keys are and what they need to look at.

The Mule Fan: Last year by having spring training you had one less week of workouts than in previous years once you got to August. Did you subconsciously or consciously feel rushed as you prepared for that opening game last year with one less week?

Coach Byrd: No it fell in place pretty nicely. The problem with our first game was Stony Point. They were a good football team and we were very, very young. But we did comment after the first few practices how much retention our players had. Our kids are smart and they take a lot of pride in the program. A lot of things we drilled on so much in the spring they came back and it was very natural to them so we were able to move on. Scheme-wise and getting ready for the first game I don’t think it affected us whatsoever.

The Mule Fan: You’ve got a brand new slab of turf out there. How does everyone like the new field?

Coach Byrd: I love it. But just like the old one though, on hot days with no cloud cover it gets pretty warm so we do go up on the practice field (natural grass) some days. Plus it’s good to change the surfaces every now and then. It’s an outstanding product. They did a great job of installing it. We’re excited about it and can’t wait to get some games going and let everybody see what Alamo Heights has going for them.

The Mule Fan: You started spring ball one day later than you originally intended (being cautious about the flu situation and potential class cancellation). Will you make that up?

Coach Byrd: What I’m going to do this year, and I learned this when I went and visited Baylor and OU, we’re going to have our spring game on the 21st and really shut down a lot of things. But we’re going to come back and work out a little bit after school that last week. We have those days. It might be just 7-on-7 stuff, it might be just individual lineman drills. We won’t stay out there long but we’re going to go ahead and get a few extra days at the end. But I would have loved to have worked out last Friday (May 1st) but in the scheme of things that’s the way it works out. The key to it is not what happens to you but how you react so we’re just going to go on and keep learning more about ourselves each day at practice.

The Mule Fan: So are you saying that after the spring game that you can stay in pads?

Coach Byrd: Right. The rule says we have 30 days to get in 18 practices. Now I don’t know if we’ll be in pads or not but we are allowed as coaches to work with the players after school. So we’re going to take advantage of that somehow, some fashion. With lineman it might just be longer weight sessions after school in the weight room. But we’re going to work with the skill guys, and with 7-on-7 so big we might spend three days just working 7-on-7 drills with our skill guys and see how far we can come along with that. But that’s the plan right now. We’ll just have to wait and see.

We get letters….

Letter to the Editor

Dear Mule Fan: I am President of the Molasses Association of North America. We represent individuals and corporations which make up the molasses industry. Our principal function is to lobby our politicians in congress about key legislative issues related to Molasses and occasionally appear on cooking shows. We've also overseen a couple of really wizzy infomercials. One of our members ran across your little Mule Fan blog and brought your story (see Mule Fan spring blog volume 1 below) to our attention. I can speak for our entire membership when I say that we were deeply offended at your reference to our product as an item used for torture. Molasses is a food product and while we may have had these issues in the past, we are confident in saying that the situation is now relatively under control and has been for many years. We find it unlikely that molasses truly was used on your editors for the purpose you described. Our industry deserves better and expects an apology from you and your Mules. We’ll be watching you guys.

Sincerely yours,
Mr. Itza Stickie
